I took up photography only recently but it’s been such a joy to hold a camera and to take a picture of something I think is beautiful to me. This might be a phase but a phase I am thoroughly enjoying and it’s the first thing that in a really long time has excited me and made me really sit up and pay attention. I think what I love the most about photography is that it really makes me look and notice the small things that I would have normally missed.

I enjoy photographing landscapes, street photography and even to a really large extent architecture. My attraction to street photography might mainly because I think it’s so honest and spontaneous and thought you might try and plan it you really can’t.

“Most of us continue to say we “support the Second Amendment” as if it were written by God (or we’re just afraid of being seen as anti-American). But this amendment was written by the same white men who thought a Negro was only 3/5 human. We’ve done nothing to revise or repeal this – and that makes us responsible, and that is why we must look at the pictures of the 20 dead children laying with what’s left of their bodies on the classroom floor in Newtown, Connecticut. And while you’re looking at the heinous photographs, try saying those words out loud: “I support the Second Amendment!” Something, I’m guessing, won’t feel right.”

Mikey Campbell of AppleInsider looks at a newly-unveiled patent filed by Apple:

Instead of sourcing power from a stationary dock, Apple’s invention calls for a tablet case, or more specifically an iPad Smart Cover, to hold the inductive power transmitter. In some embodiments, an internal battery is disposed within the case, basically creating an “on-the-go” wireless charger.

That’s a good idea. Hope it happens.

He speaks of planting seeds and waiting for them to sprout and grow. He talks about yeast and yeast takes time to rise. He talks about organic processes all the time. I want people to expand and grow, too, but I want them to grow in the right ways. You can set up the right kind of lighting and play the right music and you can get people into a froth over almost anything and then you can tell them where to walk and what to sign up for. Another Highway Robbery:

For more than a year, NewsChannel 5 Investigates has been shining a light on a practice that some call “policing for profit.”

In this latest case, a Monterey police officer took $22,000 off the driver — even though he had committed no crime.

“You live in the United States, you think you have rights — and apparently you don’t,” said George Reby …

Reby was driving down Interstate 40, heading west through Putnam County, when he was stopped for speeding.

A Monterey police officer wanted to know if he was carrying any large amounts of cash.

“I said, ‘Around $20,000,’” he recalled. “Then, at the point, he said, ‘Do you mind if I search your vehicle?’ I said, ‘No, I don’t mind.’ I certainly didn’t feel I was doing anything wrong. It was my money.”

That’s when Officer Larry Bates confiscated the cash based on his suspicion that it was drug money.

“Why didn’t you arrest him?” we asked Bates.

“Because he hadn’t committed a criminal law,” the officer answered.

Bates said the amount of money and the way it was packed gave him reason to be suspicious.

“The safest place to put your money if it’s legitimate is in a bank account,” he explained. “He stated he had two. I would put it in a bank account. It draws interest and it’s safer.”

“But it’s not illegal to carry cash,” we noted.

“No, it’s not illegal to carry cash,” Bates said. “Again, it’s what the cash is being used for to facilitate or what it is being utilized for.”

NewsChannel 5 Investigates noted, “But you had no proof that money was being used for drug trafficking, correct? No proof?”

“And he couldn’t prove it was legitimate,” Bates insisted.

Anzac Day, 2012 Freo War Memorial

Dear Dad,

I write this letter to you (too late, I know) in bright afternoon Freo sun, which I am sure you will remember. The war memorial has become a picnic spot, with families of all cultures lying relaxed in the shelter of this modest monument. Nothing threatens here; remembering is heartfelt, sincere, but strangely pleasant.

This old monument. To death, to loss, to grief.

I hear a young father telling his inquisitive daughter that these people “did die, but they died for a good reason.”

Did they? Did you, Dad?

Does this phallic missile, this up-thrusting tower represent you? Or me? Or my son and daughter?

Because you were a casualty too. Is that why you kept your light on all night? Did you hear the guns, the bombs? Maybe I am wrong; maybe that was a deeper hurt, an older grief. But in your silence about the war I saw a wounded survivor; a man who- as Judith Wright wrote- had memories that walked in his sleep like ghosts.

Until the end I was never proud of that part of your life- war seemed nothing to remember or celebrate. I did not see that your commitment to peace, as contradictory as it often appeared to me (I remember your strained and tortured attempt to explain Hiroshima), was earned by a long and painful trial that I could not even imagine.

I apologise that in my young self-righteousness, my silly puritan adolescent naivety, I did not get it, did not get you. I am ashamed that I did not honour you as I should have. In my own pain I did not feel yours; I never did understand what you were living with, dying with.

And why: because you did do it for a noble cause, and you sacrificed your great, great gift; that dreaming boy on the Uni lawn at Crawley, planning his future as a writer in New York.

With any war, no casualty is singular; all deaths contain, cause and anticipate other losses, echoing like gun fire down the passage of a family’s years, the stories of their children.

But forgive me, Dad. And thank you, Father.
